Kidwelly Castle
This castle is one of Wales’s best-kept secrets. Kidwelly, overlooking the River Gwendraeth, presents a vision of medieval times which is more complete than many of its more celebrated contemporaries.
The castle is remarkably well preserved but its most arresting feature has to be its great gatehouse, completed in 1422.
Look out for the arches through which rocks could be thrown onto attackers then allow your imagination to run riot and imagine defending the castle from your enemies.
Founded by the Normans as an earth and timber stronghold in 1106, Kidwelly was improved over the centuries, gradually assuming an increasingly domestic role with the addition of a kitchen and a new hall in more settled times.
Don’t miss the on-site exhibition and the full programme of events and prepare to be blown away by the views of Gower, Worm’s Head and Caldey Island. There are some lovely riverside walks nearby too. Kidwelly is on a par with the other great castles of Wales and gives a complete insight into the evolution of the medieval fortress.
