Carreg Cennen Castle
The ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle stand majestically some 900 ft above the River Cennen and prepare to be amazed by the 60 mile panoramic views across to the Preseli Hills to the west and the remote Black Mountain to the south. This is a haunting, atmospheric place, a castle that appears to spring out of legend and fairytale, charged with a sense of past.
Carreg Cennen’s origins are shrouded in obscurity. The existing stronghold dates from around 1300 and has something of a chequered history, falling into Welsh and English hands during the troubled medieval period.
The castle is known for its very own vaulted underground passageway which leads to a natural cave, a ghostly cavern deep beneath the fortifications, which may have been inhabited in prehistoric times.
Legend has it that the tunnel was constructed following the murder of a servant, a young lad who was killed as he collected water from a spring in the cliff face. The passage was then cut to ensure that the castle had access to water even in times of siege. Many believed the water contained magical powers.
You can explore this eerie place - don’t forget to bring a torch or hire one on the way in. There’s only one way up this 'eagle’s nest', via a steep, grassy hill as the castle perches on the edge of a 325ft cliff. Great for picnics and a must for keen walkers.
